“What if you had to tell someone the most important thing in the world, but you knew they’d never believe you?” -Denzel Washington as Agent Doug Carlin in “Déjà Vu”
That has to be one of my absolute favorite quotes, from one of my favorite films. But what I really want to focus on is the person behind this role, actor Denzel Washington. Famous for his big break in the series, “St. Elsewhere,” Washington has gone on to star in many major films, like “Philadelphia,” “The Pelican Brief,” “Remember the Titans,” “The Taking of Pelham 123,” and, most recently, “The Book of Eli.”
Tall, dark and handsome, Washington is an ideal leading man to many female fans! But besides being a “leading man,” Washington is also a “hero.”
After visiting with injured soldiers at Fisher Houses, which provide housing for the families of hospitalized veterans, Washington made a large donation to the Fisher House Foundation. He is on the board of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and is the Honorary Chairperson for Save Africa’s Children.
Denzel is also a Lifetime Founder Member of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, and has donated to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the largest non-profit hospital in the world.
So, the “Déjà Vu” star has several good deeds to his name, along with his film credits. My only question now is, given the chance, would he do it all over again? Well, if my knowledge of the film serves me correct, and if I know Denzel, my guess is he has no choice. History will repeat itself, and he’ll just keep giving back over and over again!
On another note, I wish everyone a very happy and blessed Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. May we take the time to remember a great leader who fought for the freedom of all minorities, and, in effect, all human beings. I tip my hat (even though I’m not wearing one!) to the man who spoke the immortal words: “Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, we are free at last.”
Rest in peace, M.L.K. We’ll all join you at the mountaintop in good time.
