This Week’s Rundown: Occupational Hazard & Other Lame Excuses for Forgetfulness!

Something has been nagging me, gnawing at my insides, and slowly but surely eroding away at my soul.

You see, I’ve completely neglected an important milestone in the Holdin’ Out for a Hero journey– our 2-year anniversary! Holdin’ Out turned 2 years old on August 29th, 2011, and I failed to acknowledge it. I am deeply sorry.

So, without further ado, Happy 2nd Blogiversary, Holdin’ Out for a Hero family! Thank you all so much for being there for me when the going gets tough, and when things get good, too. You have all been wonderful these past two years in understanding my frustrations at not being able to split myself in two and do more. You’ve cared about me when I’m at my most vulnerable. And together we have raised hell and raised awareness!

In celebration of our birthday, I’d like to share with you some new developments and accomplishments in getting the word out about spina bifida:

So excited to be promoting the cause LIVE on the air!

With María Ema and María Victoria at La Mágica 1220 AM!

– This past Friday, I was invited to “Lo Cultural de la Florida” radio show on La Mágica 1220 AM, a Spanish-language radio station. I was asked about my efforts to promote awareness of Spina Bifida, and I also got the opportunity to plug the Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida, which is coming up on October 29! (If you haven’t donated already, please do!! Even the smallest donation will make a huge impact on the lives of people with spina bifida in Central Florida.) I have yet to receive a copy of this interview, since it already aired live and is not on the Web site, but if/when I do, I’ll share it with you. 😉

– I was featured in the “Spotlight” on my friend, Angélica Pérez-Litwin’s Web site, New Latina™! Dr. Pérez-Litwin has a Ph.D and is a clinical psychologist determined to empower Latinas. I am so grateful to my amiga for giving me the opportunity to share my story on her site!

-My amazing friend Jenna included me on her September 3rd list of “What I Thought was Awesome This Week” on her blog, Beautiful Because. Thank you so much for your loyal support, Jenna! You’re a true friend. 😉

-I’m currently involved with organizing a new chapter for Latinos in Social Media! Being as supportive as this organization has been to me these past two years, you can imagine my disbelief and subsequent disappointment when I found out they don’t currently have a chapter in my region of Central Florida. Imagine my surprise when they asked me to help start one! I couldn’t say no, of course, as I have become so deeply passionate about their mission. Our Facebook and Twitter are already up and running, even though we’re still working on some paperwork! If you live in the Central Florida region and are passionate about the future of social media, or just want to learn, feel free to “like” our page and follow us for updates! You don’t have to be Latino/a to be a part of our community. We welcome everyone.

-And finally, one more plea! My very close friend, Elianne Ramos of LATISM, has been nominated for MillerCoors 2011 Líder of the Year! She is a trailblazer in the Latino community and has a heart of gold. That’s why, if/when she wins, she will use the prize money ($25,000!!!) to implement a leadership program for LATISM. Very cool, huh? So, please vote for her here! You will be asked for your date of birth to confirm you are over the age of 21. Then, you will be directed to the page. On the left-hand side, click the link that says “Vote for the MillerCoors 2011 Líder of the Year.” All 12 nominees are listed. Find Elianne Ramos and VOTE!! I’m counting on ALL of you to help make this happen for a truly deserving, hard-working Latina.

So that’s it for now. I know for many of you it might be difficult to visualize how my reaching out to the Latino community will benefit the spina bifida cause, but trust me, it’s in The Cause’s best interest! Since Latinos have the highest incidence of spina bifida of all ethnic groups, I can think of no better way to spend my time than educating my fellow Latinos/as and providing them with resources.

I hope you all have a beautiful rest of the week!
