So emotive. Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts with us. Labels are just that. Nothing more. Some people are stuck on them, others recognize they're nothing more. I work with a group of differently abled children... when I heard that term to describe their amputations, I was thrilled! I loved that we weren't encouraged to say they "couldn't" do this or that. In fact, they were ABLE to do amazing things that my fully abled body isn't! Amazing, right!

I found you via the rare disease blog hop. I LOVE your attitude. I too believe that God chose me specifically for my lot (a rare disease that affects only a few thousand worldwide and until relatively recently, was almost always entirely limited to children because of the limits it put on lifespan) and that I need to cherish what was given. You write beautifully and I can tell that you handle spina bifida with grace, even though I'm sure it doesn't feel like it. I wish you all the best as you continue on your journey.

P.S. My blog is at http://rollerskatingwithrickets.com. The most recent post currently is one about rarity and beauty.

Great post! I have a 3.5 year old son with SB who just got his first wheelchair this past August. I aspire to have the same "you can do it" attitude with him as your parents did with you. He can do anything, wheelchair or not!

You are so right to remind of us the true meaning of community. It's the people that open up a safe space for us to truly be ourselves with no judgement. From there we can grow and reach for the stars.

Well written and insightful. I wish all children had parents that believed in them and encouraged them regardless of their physical challenges.

Can I be a cheeseball and say this post made me all warm and fuzzy? It's such a wonderful thing when you find a person you can be yourself with. But a community of people? Well, that's just incredible. Looks like an amazing support system!

It is truly liberating to be ourselves. We usually are freer when we are around those who relate to us and have the same positive and supportive energy. Glad to see you had fun!
